American Idiot: You've Heard the Album ... Now See the Musical?

Whoa.

The musical may be a popular right now, but news that one featuring the music of Green Day’s American Idiot made me cringe a little (a “punk” musical!??!!?!?). But, then I thought a little more, and concluded that American Idiot is not – and could never become – High School Musical.

I stopped cringing.

Green Day’s “rock opera” is perfectly suited to a musical adaptation. The multi-platinum album IS a story: angst-y guitar and thoughtful lyrics examine the meaning of coming of age in contemporary America through anti-hero Jesus of Suburbia.

Since I am a fan of the album, and have had five years to recuperate from radio overplay, I might just have to see the musical when it is performed at Berkeley Repertory Theater September 4th through October 11th. Now that Boulevard of Broken Dreams is no longer hummed by 13 year-olds everywhere, I can begin to remember what the song meant to me the first time I heard it.

Altering Anatomy... Seriously?!?!

So... this might be the last season I watch Grey's.

The nail in the coffin? T.R. Knight (George) is quitting the show according to US Weekly.

I once said "I love George" about once an episode (yes, out loud). And while those days ended a while ago, I still liked to entertain the possibility of saying those words again. He was hands down the coolest character for 3 seasons. Ugh.

Hmmmm, but on the bright side, Katherine Heigl is also quitting the show, and I won't miss the ghost sex (or the awkward sex with a best friend or the weird relationship with Alex).

Why Grey's Didn't Suck This Week...

No ghost sex!! Hip, hip, hurray!!!!!

However, the music and slow motion surrounding Christina/Dr. Hunt moments was a little much. And when I say a little much, what I really mean was that I could not stop myself from laughing out loud. We get that they have a “special connection,” thank you for really bringing that point home by playing sappy (almost mournful) piano for like 30 seconds each time they have a “moment.” And thank you producers/writers for making their “moments” creepy and humorous instead of happy and romantic.

Also, I am so glad Derek did not get a chance to give Meredith that fugly stuffed bear.

"Crossover Event"

Because Grey's Anatomy can't get any worse, they have decided to combine it with Private Practice for a 2 hour special event *gag*

If I wanted to watch Private Practice, then I would watch Private Practice.

Maybe this is a sign I should stop watching Grey's, because I don't actually know if I can make it through two hours of horrible show.

Hmmmm.... all I can hope for is that the "crossover" was titled such because either A) Grey's will crossover back into the realm of good television (all relative of course) or B) Grey's is going to the place where shows go when they are cancelled to spare the misery of millions.

Either option works for me.

I have a feeling that the person who made this video had as much fun making it as I had watching it. I am not a super-fan of the song, but the video is so young and whimsical; it certainly brought a smile to my face.

Also, I couldn’t help but to giggle at little at the “walking.” It’s fabulously awkward.

I’m not a big technology or electronic geek (regrettably). Mostly, this is because I am simply too cheap and broke to buy the newest gadget. But I still could not prevent myself from salivating over the newest issue of Wired magazine at the store today.

To tell the truth would force me to admit that I did not choose the magazine for it’s content, but instead for its cover design. And the cover is AMAZING!! I seriously started at it for about five minutes strait; I was transfixed by the colors, by the boldness and the overall beauty.

But the magic of Wired did not end there. I thought that this magazine was all about “the best external hard-drive for your money” and “what phone has the best features?” And I was correct, the magazine does have articles like this, but it also has much more. “The Naked Truth” examines the Body Mass index of centerfold models, “The Plot to Kill Google” focuses on Internet law and there is also an article about the new president and his use of the web. All of these articles feature visually stunning graphics, interesting photographs and good writing.

Why has it taken me so long to discover this magazine?

I really don’t know.

Hot Pockets and Knives

Oh. My. Goodness. Wednesday night on ABC there were three whole hours of Lost (2 hours of new episodes!!!!!)! It was epic. It was wonderful. And despite all the confusion this show produces, a sometimes slow plot, and too many WTF-a-polar-bear? type moments, the season premier once again proved that Lost is wonderful.


My favorite parts of the premier:

Hurley throwing a hot pocket. – Does comedy get any better than this? Um, I think not.

Hurley killin’ a man with a catsup knife – Classic Hurley.

Sawyer and his lack of shirt – Did anyone else notice that Sawyer didn’t have a shirt on for practically the whole premier?!?!!?!? Not like I minded, but really, Sawyer is not a character like those played by Matthew McConaughey; just because you had the ABILITY to let him go shirtless for two hours, does not mean you should have ALLOWED Sawyer go around through time (or/and space?) without a shirt on, for SO long.

Sighting of drug plane with Echo’s brother in it. – Woot, woot thanks writers for connecting things together.

Hurley’s summary of the first 4 seasons to his mom – ABC could have just said this line before the premier in about 15 seconds instead of airing an hour long introduction.



I am looking forward to next episode.

It's no 'Dog'

Sometimes you just want to see a good movie: you don’t want to feel the film looking down upon your intelligence over its rimless glasses and grinning with pretentious delight, and you don’t want to see another eye-roll-ing-ly predictable chick flick or an oh-too-simple-blow-‘em-up movie, you just want to watch a good movie.

Slumdog Millionaire satisfies this need. After winning a Golden Globe, this low-budget film is probably showing at a movie theater somewhere near you (well at least semi-near you). And you should take advantage of the film’s new popularity. Indulge your entertainment desires and see it!!

Although Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian claims that the film is “overpraised,” I came out of the movie theater with a smile on my face and a semi-sweet joy pulsating throughout my body. I have not seen every movie of 2008, but I am fairly confident when I claim that this film is the best film of 2008. Exceptional acting and beautiful cinematography help to tell a story that balances bitter life in the slums with reflections of unflagging love.

The film captures the real slums of India and these scenes pull on the viewer’s heartstrings while providing a shallow underlying social commentary on poverty, but this social commentary and the sadness of life in the slums is not overwhelming; the sadness is balanced by the love story that stretches throughout the film.

The love story between Jamal and Latika is the emotional force that drives the movie and the characters themselves. Slumdog’s love story is not a Hollywood boy-meets-girl. The love is true, deep and meaningful; it remains despite distance, time, and the hardship of life in the slums.

At the end of the movie you might just have a smile on your face (so worth the $10 ticket!).

Wish you were better.....

The latest Grey's Anatomy episode "Wish You Were Here" leaves something to be desired. An episode all about wishes left me wishing that the show would stop making me cringe. Although, to be fair, this is the best Grey's episode in a while. But really, this is not saying much. This episode still left a bad taste in my mouth.

This season, viewers had to endure weeks of ghost sex (won't Izzie get over it already?), annoying doctors who just can’t get it though their big heads that they are not number one and an absence of any scenes showing the supposedly happy and healthy relationship between Meredith and Derek (The first romantic relationship of Grey's deserves some screen time sharing happy moments. Every viewer who has ever watched the show routed for their relationship at one time or another..... come on Grey's indulge the audience a little).

Although "Wish You Were Here" does continue to focus on the Alex/Izzie/Denny horrible love/sex triangle of horrors and sad and upset (and rather boring) Christina, other parts of the show reminded me of why I started watching this show in the first place:

Meredith and Derek FINALLY share a cute romantic moment. Although I had a moment where I thought Derek was going to strip for Meredith..... the "dance it out" scene was one of those moments that reminds us that these characters are in love and that maybe they can help to fix each other.

We learn something about Derek (again... FINALLY). We seriously know like two things about pre-Seattle Grace Derek ... and this episode he shared a big one. And *gasp* this sharing of past also serves as a very mature moment of Meredith and Derek's relationship. These two kids may finally be growing up. Yay character growth.

Also on the lines of character growth.... Alex has certainly changed. Although I find the short transition time a little unbelievable from "I am an ass who hates the one person who cares about me (oh and I really don't like anyone else either" to more along the lines of "Here is what I am feeling...I did something nice for you to show I care...I love you." But this character transition (although sudden) is really refreshing after waiting over four seasons for Alex to leave his boyish ways behind and finally become a man. Goodbye Dr. Evil Spawn, I won't be missing you.


BUT, in the end these things were not enough to save the episode. However, if these positive elements of this episode turn into trends, then season 5 might be saved.

re-watch all of season 3 and 4 of Lost before the 21st when season 5 starts!!!!!! OMG omg omg omg. Who is excited? ....

"Do What You Feel Now"

So, I have been watching a lot of news on tv lately and have officially determined that local news is no longer worth my time. I have never timed it or anything.... but local news spends about 14 minutes doing a crime report, 8 minutes reporting weather and the remaining time on real news (which mostly is depressing because it is all about the horrid economy and the continuing conflict in Gaza: depression and death).

Generally, I enjoy being happy so I have determined that the way to best accomplish this in the current economy is to stop watching local news programs and to watch the music video for Electric Feel by MGMT at least once a day.

I love this video. I want to be in this video. It's a dance party in a forest!

Hells yeah this is the best way to ward off your economic depression!
